Reunion shows. Call them what you will. Nostalgic recreations by old geezers attempting to lure fellow oldsters back into a once warm and fuzzy adolescent haze? Well maybe. Most reunions you hear about are rarely done for the music, or the fans for that matter. I will always wave my KISS banner high in the air but let’s be honest here-those makeup rockers of my youth were surely more attracted to dollars signs than fulfilling fans desires of a reunion. You’ll never convince me otherwise. (they wouldn’t still be dragging their still costumed carcasses around the world over a decade later with only two original members if it wasn’t for the money).

But sometimes when the planets are just right, on rare occasions, musical reunions DO happen for all the right reasons.

Walking into Sky City this past Friday night I wasn’t sure what to expect. Having arrived shortly before the 10 pm scheduled start time I was a tad bit nervous about the lack of people in the venue. No sooner had I found a seat at the front bar, people began streaming in droves.
Looking around I noticed right off the bat that this was not going to be a typical night of rock and roll in downtown Augusta, Georgia. Friends hugged and smiled, many with that “wow you look great!” facial expression that everyone gets when seeing someone for the first time in a while. This was going to be more than just a night filled with band reunions, but in many ways a generational reunion, for some a class reunion, and as one patron suggested, a Squeakys Tip Top reunion. But if I make it sound like simply a large group of forty something’s gathering to relive the music of their youth then let me quickly apologize because the audience was also made up of younger folks curious enough to take part in a “live and in living color” look at an integral part of Augusta’s musical history. The pupils would not be disappointed. While the Debt of Nature reunion has been the talk of the town for weeks now, it was not the only musical reunion to take place on this night.

Coco Rubio, Vic Baker, and Howard Merry dusted off the old oven and, if only for one night, pie was served. SHOO FLY PIE that is. While I had not previously had the pleasure of being served “The Pie” before, I am already craving seconds. I had heard a few “descriptions” of what SHOO FLY PIE would taste…er….sound like and I found very few of them to personally be accurate. Imagine a cross between early Beatles and the American garage bands of the late sixties and I think you might be able to picture “The Pie.” Being that I am a big fan of sixties garage bands SHOO FLY PIE had me hooked right off the bat. Nothing complicated, just good, fun, catchy rock. Rubio kept it snappy while Baker and Merry sugar-coated the crust with some very sweet and loose harmonies. Now if we can just get ‘em played on Little Steven’s Underground Garage!

While not a reuniting of an old school Augusta band, NIGHT PEOPLE features Matthew Buzzell, a former member of bands from the same time period as SHOO FLY PIE and DEBT OF NATURE such as THEN THEY TOLD STORIES, ORPHAN TRAIN, and STAN’S BIKE. Throw in Eric Kinlaw (Deathstar/Shaun Piazza Band), Noel Brown (The Cubists/Shaun Piazza Band) and Sean Eden (Luna) and you have one loaded band. Just calling NIGHT PEOPLE “mood” or “slow” rock is doing them a major injustice. The band’s set started off in a, as Joco called it, “Pink Floyd-ish” way and headed in several different directions mixing mellow moods and catchy pop. Very different in a very very nice way offering at times a contrast to the two other bands on the bill.

The best way to describe DEBT OF NATURE, featuring David Bradberry, Steve Howard, David Newhall, & Marc Tompkins, is SONIC! For anyone afraid that DON would not musically measure up to its past, they had all fears erased from note one. The power coming off the Sky City stage was brutal. Howard’s drums pounding, Newhall’s distinctive bass style, the raw guitars and gentle yet intense vocals of Bradberry and Tompkins. It was all there, once again, for a whole new generation of rock fans to get throttled by. Perhaps older, maybe wiser, age has done nothing to diminish the sonic power of DEBT OF NATURE or their songs. (The same can’t be said of KISS)

This past Friday was a celebration of friends and a musical time long since passed but not forgotten. A rare moment bringing together the ghosts of Augusta’s musical past with its present and bright future. It was an opportunity for some to see how in many ways we got to where we are now.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this night somehow has an effect on where we end up twenty more years down the road.

In these trying times often it is easy to forget about the blessings life has bestowed up us. In the past lokal music was not only good for listening to, but also a good way to escape the daily grind of life if even just for a few hours. With the economy all turned upside down “escaping” has become much harder. Folks just don’t have the money to get out as often as they’d like and being right in the middle of the holiday season money is needed to buy gifts for those we love to give gifts to. For most of us, it has surely been a rougher year than usual.

A coupe of weeks ago Jeannie and I stopped at Subway on Fury’s Ferry Road for some carry-out and inside found a decorated Christmas tree with “angel” tags. For those of you unfamiliar with angel tags-these are tags put on trees that usually have a description (ex. boy age 14) and a gift that the person wants for Christmas. You grab a tag, buy the gift, attach the tag to the gift, then return the gift to the tree to be picked up and distributed with all the other angel tag gifts to the recipients. We have done this for years at our church but this is the first time I personally had seen one elsewhere. It’s a great idea that I wish more businesses would take part in. The one is Subway was run by the Salvation Army and featured angel tags ranging in ages from young to old. It’s truly a blessing when even the neediest of people can have at least a little bit of Christmas. But as much as I like the idea, something about this particular tree disturbed me.

A few days later I returned to Subway to drop off gifts for angel tags that Jeanie and I had picked up. There were a few gifts under the tree and plenty of tags I didn’t look closer and just hoped to myself that Salvation Army picked up gifts and added new tags often and that somewhere in Augusta there was a Salvation Army deliver guy toting a truck packed with presents. As I was placing gifts under the tree I noticed a unusually large tag smack in the middle of the tree. At first excited that it might be something neat and Christmasy, I was shocked to find that it was an advertisement for one of the other businesses in the same strip mall with “decorations provided by:” and the name of the business really big underneath. Now maybe I’m just being overly sensitive, maybe it’s my disdain for the commercial side of the holidays but this really ticked me off! Here was this beautiful tree loaded with tons of sentiment and providing opportunity for love, sharing, and good will and right in the middle was this large “advertisement.” I appreciate the business providing the decorations but they can plan on not seeing me walk through their doors anytime soon, if ever. But even so, I would still like to wish them a merry Christmas. I just hope Santa puts a big sign on their tree that says “true meaning of Christmas provided by…”

Yes this as been a tough year. There have been hardships and for many, heartaches. As many of you know, this will be the first holiday season that Jeannie and I will spend without our little angel Alexis. It hasn’t been easy but we’ve tried our best to surround ourselves with good friends and family and of course, each other. While it doesn’t make up for that empty spot in our hearts we have tried to look back and think about all the Christmas’ in the past that we have been blessed with. Sharing stories has brought tears and smiles. We know that we are not alone in our heartache. There are many in the world carrying sadness through the holidays. We pray, not only for ourselves to get through the holiday season, but for others in pain as well to be able to do so. But friends, in times of darkness there is always a light, even if it is dim and hard to see, it is there. That light is the blessings of friends and family. Through this past year we have learned that we have more than our fair share of both. There is also the blessing of knowing there is a special angel looking down on us even if we didn’t put up a tree this year and topped it off with one. True Christmas gifts aren’t the ones you wrap up and put under the tree. They are the ones that touch your heart each and every day. The gifts you may not necessarily be able to wrap your arms around every day but carry with you as you continue through life. Alexis may not have been with us for long but she left us with a gift, and from what we’ve seen the past few months, we are not the only one’s who have received it. Through Alexis we have been brought so much love and in time we will be able to enjoy it more and more. It is a gift that will continue well after the last bit of wrapping paper has been discarded, the tree had been taken down, and the mistletoe put away for another year.

Here’s wishing you and yours many holiday blessings,
